Maine Medical Center remembers George H.W. Bush as an 'American treasure'

The president of the Maine Medical Center remembers the recently deceased President George H.W. Bush, calling him a "very special part" of the MMC family.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) - The impact of President Bush's passing is felt throughout Maine, particularly at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The Bush family has always been a large part of the hospital, especially the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. The Bushes attended the groundbreaking of that hospital, and the First Lady would often read to the children there.

"The President and Mrs. Bush have been a very special part of our family for a number of years," said President and CEO of Maine Medical Center Richard Petersen. "I've always referred to them as American treasures and clearly a treasure to the state of Maine and in particular Maine Medical Center and the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, so we are all very sad today."

Margaret Bush, President Bush's daughter-in-law, is on the hospital's board of trustees. She will be carrying on the Bush family legacy within the hospital.
