Maine man jailed for floating to Canada on air mattress

A 25-year-old American bought an air mattress at the Walmart in Calais, Maine, and was arrested after using it to cross the St. Croix River and illegally enter Canada.

CALAIS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man from Maine used an air mattress to float across the St. Croix River in southeastern Maine and illegally enter New Brunswick late Wednesday, according to CBC News in New Brunswick.

They say the 25-year-old was motivated by what he said was a desire to protect his girlfriend who is Canadian.

According to CBC News John Bennett told police he had tried to cross the border at the Calais border crossing but customs denied him because he was facing mischief charges.

Bennet was sentenced to two months in jail Thursday.

According to CBC News, the provincial court in Saint John, N.B., was told Bennett purchased an air mattress at the local Walmart, inflated it and later used a wooden board to paddle across to an area near Ledge Road, southeast of St. Stephen, N.B.

CBC News says a local resident spotted the Bennett and he was later arrested. He told police he had to get to his pregnant girlfriend because he was worried for her safety because her ex-boyfriend was threatening her.
