AUBURN (NEWS CENTER Maine) — An ambulance on its way to a medical emergency hit an SUV, sending two others to the hospital.

Officials with the Auburn Fire Dept. say the ambulance was responding to a medical emergency Monday around 8 p.m. with lights and sirens on when it hit a car that failed to yield.

The ambulance was on Center Street when it hit the Dodge Durango driven by 71-year-old Edward Jones of Wilton. Jones and his passenger, Phyllis Jones, 70, were taken to Central Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say Jones's license was under suspension and he is being charged with operating after suspension.

Firefighter Mark Tripp, who was driving the ambulance, and his passenger, Lt. Stephen Coombs, were not injured in the accident.

Both the ambulance and SUV were seriously damaged.

Authorities say they continue to investigate the crash.
