Latest crime stats for Maine show a significant drop

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Maine's crime rate experienced its largest drop in years.

The latest figures compiled for the year 2013 show a drop of 9.1 percent, the biggest dip since 1993.

"Maine continues to be one of the safest states in the country and last year was the safest in Maine in two decades", said John Morris, Commissioner of Public Safety.

The only crime category that saw an increase for the year was aggravated assault. It was up it was up 17.4 percent statewide. Another troubling statistic was in rural areas where there was a significant increase in the number of rapes reported, up nearly 12-percent. Statewide rapes dropped slightly.

Each year the Maine Department of Public Safety tabulates the number of crimes reported by local, county and state law enforcement agencies. For 2013, there was just more than 32-thousand crimes reported.
