Icy spots Sunday, but a bigger winter storm likely Tuesday | Maine Weather Blog

The winter weather pattern is rolling on.

The winter weather pattern is rolling on.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for freezing rain near the coast and a wintry mix inland Sunday.

It may be just cold enough for icy spots to form, even as far south as the coast, early in the day. Then it’ll be a cold rain, while mixed rain and snow showers continue inland. Highs will be in the mid to upper 30s.

There won't be much accumulation anywhere, maybe an inch or two of snow in the mountains, but it may be just enough to grease up untreated roads.

We get a break Sunday night into Monday, before the next storm arrives. It’ll be bigger and colder.

Precipitation moves into western Maine late Monday afternoon, in the form of snow inland and a mix or rain near the coast. It will overspread the rest of the state during the night.

As the storm strengthens and temperatures drop overnight into early Tuesday, the rain/snow line will move south, even changing the coast to some snow by Tuesday morning.

Expect school delays and cancellations, again. Several inches of snow are likely, especially inland. It looks like I'll be digging out a Storm Center sweater, again.

The snow will continue for much of the day in eastern and northern Maine, winding down during the midday and afternoon farther south.

Todd Gutner filled in for Cory on the Weekend Morning Report earlier and pulled a Carson -- in other words, he felt ambitious enough to put a snow map out "super early". I like it though and think it's a good estimate, being 48+ hours out.

We'll tweak this if necessary Sunday. My biggest question is near the coast -- how much snow will mix in, and how heavy will it be? There may be a huge uptick in amounts, as shown below, so any shift in the rain/snow line will make a big difference.

Stay with us for updates over the next few days. Even after this storm, it looks chilly to end the week.
