Police are investigating the theft of a grave marker stolen from a fallen officer's grave in Mount Hope Cemetery.

AUGUSTA (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A graveside marker for two fallen officers was stolen from Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta, according to police.

Augusta Police help maintain the grave sites and they are investigating the theft of a brass flag holder from officer Rufus Lishness' grave.

Police say every summer, brass flag holders with the words “Maine Law Enforcement Officer Killed in the Line of Duty” are placed at both of their grave sites along with small state of Maine flags.

Officer Rufus Lishness died on Nov. 11, 1884, and officer Selden Jones died on May 17, 1930. Both were killed in the line of duty while serving in their Maine communities.

Augusta Police are asking for the community's help in finding the marker. If anyone has information, they are asked to call officer Anthony Drouin at 626-2370 or anthony.drouin@augustamaine.gov
