GORHAM, Maine — A video showing a police officer running alongside two young girls in Gorham is going viral, gaining hundreds of reactions.

The 20-second video shows Officer Alisha Smith running with two young girls that the were training for a 5K race through 'Girls on the Run,' according to the post from the police department on its Facebook page.

Girls on the Run is a program that inspires girls to get interested in health and fitness, while recognizing their inner strength.

"Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness," the website states.

Girls on the Run is the only national physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls with compelling evidence of program impact, according to the website.

The group hosts two 5Ks in Maine, one in southern Maine at Saint Joseph's College in Standish, and one in Bangor.
