Generous donations made across Maine

The Holden Police Department and the Bucksport Area Chamber of Commerce are making generous donations for worthy causes.

The Holden Police Department has been holding it’s 25 Days of Kindness campaign this month. The department has donated to Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army, local schools and churches. On Friday, police chief Chris Greeley took his generosity outside of the box, and into the streets.

Chief Greeley spent the morning handing out his own one-dollar bills to unsuspecting drivers stopped at the intersection of 1-A and Route 46.

“For just a few dollars we got the chance to interact with people in the community. It’s fun,” said Greeley.

The Holden Police Departments generosity continued later into the day. Greeley stopped by the Holden Elementary School, and donated money towards the school’s food program to help families afford their lunch bills.

Thirty minutes down east in Bucksport, the Miles Lane School received a donation to help their Friday Food Program. The donation came from Hannaford and the Bucksport Area Chamber of Commerce.

In October, the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce held the 10th Annual “Ghostport” event downtown which includes the "Jonathan Buck's Race to the Grave" coffin race. Employees from Hannaford in Bucksport competed against two other teams and secured the first-place spot, allowing them to donate a check co-sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank and PCT Communications to the charity organization of their choice.

Hannaford chose to donate toward the Miles Lane School’s Friday Food Program. Hannaford then matched the original check, giving a total of $1,000 towards the program. The Friday Food Program sends students in need home with food for the weekend to keep them from going hungry.

“We got $500 from the Coffin Races and then Hannaford decided to match those donations. It’s just amazing,” said Heather Rawcliffe, the Miles Lane School social worker.

“It just helps them fund program for the kids in the future and gives them a foot to stand on to make sure kids are getting fed over the weekend,” said Eric Breton, the manager of the Bucksport Hannaford.

In addition, at Tozier's Turkey Trail, the Chamber collected donations to help the Bucksport Community Concerns Food Pantry, and a check was presented for them at Miles Lane School on Friday.
