PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- A long-lasting legacy, forever emblazoned on the walls of Maine Medical Center. The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital bears the name of the former First Lady.

Over two decades ago, Mrs. Bush spoke at the announcement of the hospital in front of a crowded auditorium, and the 41st President of the United States, her husband George H.W. Bush.

“Well guess you know how pleased and touched I am to be honored this way,” said Mrs. Bush. "George and I know from personal experience what it’s like to have a sick child. And we are happy and grateful to know for generations to come you will be giving that same kind of loving care to the children of Maine and this entire region.”

Mrs. Bush is an advocate for children health and for literacy. She often came to Portland to read to patients. The Bush family has a home in Kennebunkport where they return almost every summer to vacation.
