ROCKPORT, Maine (NEWSCENTER) -- The Rockport Fire Department spent part of the morning battling a fire at a landfill. Crews got the call just before 7 a.m. and arrived at Midcoast Solid Waste Corporation.

Fire Crews received some help from construction employees working on scene who used an excavator to help open up the pile of debris that was on fire.

The Fire Chief said the fire was about 30 to 40 feet deep and about 20 feet wide. At one point flames were shooting up 20 feet in the air.

It took just over an hour to get the fire under control. The fire is now out and no one was hurt.

Fire Chief Jason Peasley said they used about 7000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.
