FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Searchers pulled the body of a missing 14-year-old from the Presumpscot River in Falmouth Friday morning.

Police say Mohammed al Ammar from Portland, was kayaking near Allen Avenue with a friend when their boat flipped over. The friend, who was wearing a life jacket made it safely to shore. Police say Ammar was not wearing a life jacket.

Sgt. Thomas Hale said searchers found al Ammar's body about 15 yards downstream from the Allen Avenue Extension Bridge. Police believe the Deering High student was a decent swimmer but a swift current and not wearing a life jacket played a role in his drowning.

Emergency crews searched the river Thursday night and Friday morning closing traffic on the Allen Avenue Extension Bridge.

The call came in about the missing kayaker at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
