JONESPORT, Maine — A second federal cemetery is in the works in Maine.
Bangor Daily News reports that the federal government is developing the 6.2-acre cemetery on Route 1 in Jonesport that's expected to be completed by spring of 2020. Maine has four state-run cemeteries for veterans and a federal cemetery in Chelsea.
The property is donated by Worcester Holdings, a group launched by the founders of Worcester Wreath Co. and the nonprofit groups Wreaths Across America.
A National Cemetery Administration spokesman says the project is part of a federal Department of Veterans Affairs initiative to improve burial access for veterans in rural parts of the country.
Since 1961, Maine's federal-run cemetery has restricted burials to veterans, spouses or eligible family members who already have an immediate family member buried on site.
