CORINNA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Police say the dog that attacked and killed a 7-year-old boy in Corinna was an unregistered male pit bull.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office said Monday that the pit bull killed Hunter Bragg of Bangor in Corinna on Saturday. They said the boy was playing in the yard when the dog attacked him.

Police said the owner of the dog is 45 year-old Gary Merchant. At the owners request, the dog was euthanized.

A site on GoFundMe.com has been set up to help the family of the boy pay for funeral expenses.

Officials say they continue to investigate the events leading to the boys death.
