Bulgarian man accused of kidnapping girlfriend in Houlton

HOULTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police are calling a man from Houlton a "public threat" after being arrested for holding his own girlfriend captive. They say Dushko Vulchev, who is originally from Bulgaria, has a history of odd behavior. He's facing kidnapping and domestic violence assault charges.

Houlton police chief, Joe McKenna, said they received a notice from the Westbrook Police Department on Monday with a warrant out for Vulchev's arrest. "Apparently, he had gone to a business down there or had been in touch with a business down there, harrassing the business," said McKenna.

On Tuesday, police went to Vulchev's home, but no one answered. They also received a call from his girlfriend's family, asking them to check on her. A search warrant was issued, and police found Vulchev and his girlfriend inside a bedroom, where they said he was holding the woman against her will.

"He took her keys, her clothes, her cell phone, and her watch. When we found her, she was naked in the bedroom and was unable to get out of the house," said McKenna.

This is not Vulchev's first run-in with the law. Last year, he wrote a threatening e-mail to Bulgarian officials, stating "I will slit your throats. I will kill you like chickens." He was sentenced to time served.

Last week, police say Vulchev asked police for paperwork so he could send weapons overseas. They also say he followed an Aroostook County Sheriff Deputy home, resulting in a trespass warrant. This past Monday, police say Vulchev tried to buy several guns from M.A.C.S Trading Post in Houlton.

"This is something we need to address in the gun laws we currently have. Even if it doesn't preclude them from getting a weapon, there should be at least a flag or an alert that there are situations that need to be evaluated," said McKenna.

Vulchev is being held on $25,000 bail and McKenna believes additional charges are likely.
