Bar Harbor voters have decided they want to move forward with the town's proposal to turn the dormant ferry terminal off of Eden Street into a new hub for cruise ships.
The town will now be to purchase the ferry terminal from the Maine Department of Transportation, after voters passed Article 12 Tuesday 945 to 658. Article 12 is a zoning change that would allow cruise ships and other vessels to dock at the ferry terminal.
Voters also rejected Article 13, with only 679 yes votes to 925 no votes. Article 13 is a counter proposal created by residents that wanted to ensure citizens had a final say on cruise ship passenger caps and the size of cruise ships that would dock at the terminal.
Officials say the Department of Transportation would not have sold the ferry terminal to the town if Article 12 did not pass or if Article 13 did pass.
