After-hours excursion at Sunday River ends with one death, another critically injured

A death on the slopes of Sunday River occurred early in the morning while the trails were still closed

NEWRY (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- One teenager is dead and another is in critical condition after an early morning sledding accident at Sunday River.

Resort spokesperson Darcy Lambert said the person who died was part of a group that ventured onto the Tempest trail around 2 a.m. on Wednesday after the mountain had closed for the night. When they got into trouble, a 911 call brought help from the fire departments in Newry and Bethel and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office.

The teenagers involved are believed to be from New Hampshire.

The trail remained closed to facilitate the investigation after business hours resumed later in the morning, but eventually reopened.
