BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- It has been years in the making, and it will be years to come before the ship "Virginia," is finished at the Freight Shed in Bath's Historic District. Maine's First Ship was reportedly the first English ship built by the Popham Colony after they landed in what is now referred to as the state of Maine.
Volunteer builders have been replicating the ship for eight years, and they have a tentative launch date of June 7th, 2020. Volunteers work Wednesdays and Saturdays, but anyone can stop in a help with construction if you sign a waiver.
Maine's First Ship launched the Summer of Freight Shed 2018, where it features different demonstrations and lectures on the 17th century time period, work ethic, and knowledge of historic boat building.
