5th annual Summit Project honors fallen vets surrounding September 11th

"We carry their stone for a hike; We carry their stone for a lifetime." Founder Major David Cote explains

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Bikers and community members gathered at the Elks Lodge in Portland to load and transport memorial stones of deceased veterans after September 11th, 2001 to Millinocket.

Each stone is engraved with the names of fallen Maine vets and will be transported via motorcycles and vehicles where they will be passed on to their families at Baxter State Park.

The memorial stones will be held by the families until the following day, where they will be passed on to another group who will hike them up Mount Katahdin.

Phil and Joan Naumann Thain have participated in the Summit Project since it started five years ago and have made many friendships along the way.

"We have made friends, lifelong friends just from this one event that will carry on forever," says Phil.

Joan has felt honored to be apart of the event for so long and has no intention of stopping any time soon.

"I can't imagine not doing it. I will do it as long as I can physically do it."

The Summit Project is based in Maine and was founded by Major David Cote five years ago.
