PORTLAND, Maine — Among the enduring pleasures of Maine is discovering places—really cool places—that you had no idea even existed. Here’s one that many people could add to their list: the Maine Sculpture Trail.

The trail consists of more than thirty sculptures spread across the coast of eastern Maine with a few more located in the Bangor/Orono area. Jesse Salisbury, a sculptor from Steuben, hatched the idea for the trail more than a decade ago. What’s even more impressive is that, with a formidable combination of energy and persistence, he kept pushing the idea forward, bringing in volunteers and donors and entire communities, not giving up until his dream was realized.

Listen to Salisbury tell the story of how he and scores of other people created the Sculpture Trail. There’s really nothing else quite like it in Maine.
