Take It Or Leave It: Thanksgiving Turkey

Lee Goldberg teaches Rob and Lance how to prepare and cook a Thanksgiving Turkey on this episode of Take It Or Leave It.

SOUTH PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- I'm not, nor have I ever claimed to be, a good cook. Lance isn't as bad as I am, but neither of us should be left in charge of cooking the Thanksgiving turkey.

For that reason, we turned to Lee Goldberg for help. Bill Green showed us how to hunt a turkey, so now it's Lee's turn to teach us how to cook the bird for Thanksgiving. Lee gets up bright and early for the November holiday to prepare and start cooking his family's meal. You can watch it for yourself during his annual Facebook live that happens Thanksgiving morning.

Lee explained to me that it's a simple process. All I had to do was buy the turkey and four sticks of salted butter before hand. I did that, however I failed to realize that buying a frozen turkey 15 minutes before it needs to be prepared isn't going to work. Turns out, there is no section of the grocery store that has thawed turkey. That's my bad! Remember what I said earlier about not being a good cook? Now you have proof!

Lee took the frozen turkey and made the best of it, thawing it as much as possible with hot water to at least show us how important butter is to the process. The four sticks of salted butter needs to be cut up and put under the skin of the turkey. Watch the video of our story to see how that's done, what temperature to cook the bird at and for how long.

What did Lance and me learn? Turkey's need more than fifteen minutes to thaw and it's best to leave the Thanksgiving meal to other family members. We'll offer to bring a store bought pie for dessert instead.
