OLD ORCHARD BEACH (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- For more than 30 years, Special Olympics Maine has hosted the annual New Years Day Lobster Dip. It's an event that was started in 1988 as a way to kick off a new year of fundraising for the organization that works with Maine athletes.
Teams sign up to raise money for Special Olympics Maine, pledging to run straight into the chilly Atlantic Ocean. Lisa Bird, with Special Olympics Maine says it's a fun way to kick off the new year. Costumes are encouraged.
Bird says in 2018 dippers raised more than $100,000 for statewide, year-round sports training and athletic competitions for more than 4,500 adults and children with intellectual disabilities.
After the dip, the party continues with music and day-long family fun.
