(NEWS CENTER Maine) — Ten years ago, it was the lure of an ‘out-of-the-box’ summer job that drew Doug Quint to driving an ice cream truck for one summer. “Why not?” he figured. And if all failed, he’d move on to the next venture. He launched a Facebook page to track the progress of the truck, gathered thousands of followers, and — for lack of any other name — called it ‘The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck’. Along with partner Brian Petroff, and without any experience in the ice cream world — they tried unusual toppings, and wild combinations. They were — truly — making it up as they went along. A spot on the Rachel Ray drew (what seemed like) ALL of New York City to their truck, and the truck moved in to the fast lane of high end ice cream companies. They outgrew the truck, opened a shop in New York City, and their reputation continued to spread. For Pittsfield native Doug Quint, it all came full circle when pints of Big Gay Ice Cream made their way to the freezer shelves of Shaw’s supermarkets through his home state of Maine. He sat down with us on a perfect day to eat ice cream to talk about the wild ride of his success.
