John Getchell was tired of shoveling. It was the winter of 2015 and January and February brought nearly 2 feet of snow in back to back storms. Most folk living in Maine where thinking of ways to reinvent the shovel, or at least move to Florida for a spell. John Getchell found himself wandering the aisles of a big box store in South Portland. It was a safe place to wonder. Nothing to shovel. He discovered an Internally Illuminated Portable Marquee. You know what this is. It is the sign in front of the church on Rt 3 telling you You Are A Sinner. Or in front of the VFW announcing the Bean Supper, but the letters have fallen off and the message reads Be Sup er.
The first thought that came to Mr. Getchell's mind was to find the letters and write something inappropriate, step back, and watch for drifters. Of course, he couldn't find any letters. But he did find genius. He bought the sign, created some rules for himself and for the past 2 years he's been proselytizing the ironic, the outrageous and the comic genii that stirs in all of us that live through the dread and cold of February's breath.
Mr. Getchell placed his sign in front of his house in Arundel let the letters share his comic genius. Tour buses sometimes slow down so to read the sign. He's LEGALIZED MARINARA and wrote to STRIKE THE IRONY WHILE IT'S HOT. He even got a book deal out of it.
Sign of The Apocalypse.
No, that's not hyperbole, it's the name of John Getchell's book.
