(NEWS CENTER) -- The below average temperatures on Sunday didn't stop people from heading out for the 17th annual Mary's Walk and Kerrymen 5K race.

The event is held annually in honor of Mary Kerry Libby - a 44-year-old who died from Burkitt's Lymphoma in 1997.

Libby's friends and family decided they wanted to do something to help other families avoid a similar tragedy. So they created Mary's Walk to raise money to support the work being done at the Maine Cancer Foundation.

The event kicked off with the Kerrymen 5K, followed by the walk.

"The race is getting a lot stronger as the years go by," said Allyn Genest, a race participant. "More people are getting involved in special races like this, you know, for the cause and everything. It means a lot."

If you'd like to donate to Mary's Walk, you can head to their website.
