PORTLAND, Maine — Dozens of people gathered in front of City Hall in Portland on Tuesday to rally as part of the group 'Justice for Isahak'.
The 22-year-old was shot and killed earlier this year after an argument turned deadly. Muse's body was found on March 16 at a home at 107 Milton Street in Portland.
His accused killer, 24-year-old Mark Cardilli Jr., lives at that address. Cardilli was arrested and charged with Muse's death on April 5 but says he shot Muse in self-defense.
On May 7, a judge granted Cardilli bail on $50,000.
Portland community members joined Muse's family on May 14 to protest Cardilli's bail. They held up signs with messages like, 'Cash bail is not justice' and 'Black Lives Matter' and marched to the Court House after chanting, "Justice for Isahak".
At the rally, Muse's sister delivered an emotional statement about her brother's death.
In written form, Muse's family, friends, and Portland's minority community addressed their concerns with how officials are handling the case.
"What's been determined thus far is that Isahak was UNARMED and shot in the BACK. We want everybody to focus on the victim, my brother. He's the one that lost his life. He's the one that deserves answers."
The statement continues:
"A community has lost one of their beloved members, a family has lost their son, brother, uncle, and cousin. Meanwhile, the known perpetrator, without question Mr. Mark Cardilli, gets to be out on bond. This is not what we call a system that works. Our family will continue to fight for justice on behalf of Isahak and will not let the system fail him."
