State adjusts track and trace system after initial confusion and concerns

The track and trace system was unveiled in Augusta on Monday, creating concerns from the Marijuana industry.

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Office of Marijuana Policy quickly responded to concerns about a new marijuana track and trace system after the people in the industry complained that it would be too expensive.

The cloud-based software called BIOTrackTHC, uses barcode-based tags and labels to track the growth and distribution of marijuana products.

The Portland Press Herald reports some marijuana industry members were concerned that individual plants would require hundreds of tags for the entire life of one plant because it would be processed into many different products. The cost of tags would skyrocket the cost of one plant. The marijuana office later clarified that individual products available for sale would not require individual labels. Individual tags and labels will cost 25 cents.

The office says the track and trace system is required in the state's marijuana legalization act.

In-depth training for BioTrackTHC will be given after the event and throughout the week at different locations in Augusta, Bangor, Lewiston, and Portland.

The event was held at the Augusta Civic Center and was open to the public.
