Eliot Cutler speaks about his proposal for a new graduate center in Portland.

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After starting a job with the University of Maine System seven-weeks ago, Eliot Cutler met with the Board of Trustees in Bangor on Sunday.

The former gubernatorial candidate is proposing a new graduate center in Portland, to unite the UMaine business and law schools to help enhance graduate opportunity and boost the state's economy. The program would combine the graduate business degree programs at USM and UMaine Orono with the University of Maine School of Law.

Cutler said he believes this program will attract out-of-staters to Maine to live and study. He also believes graduates will be more prepared for the workplace after leaving the program, because they'd have real world experiences.

The center would be supported by outside financial investors.
Critics say they're concerned about implementing the idea and the certification of the program.
