New Nokomis Middle/High School literally signed off on by students

A large economic boost is expected to be felt after the new Nokomis Middle/High School is finished.

NEWPORT (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Wednesday was banner raising day at the new Nokomis Middle/High School.

The $50 million dollar project being completed by Brewer company, Nickerson & O'Day, has been signed off on by students who will learn in the building come fall.

The students signed the banner before it was raised into the rafters of the soon-to-be cafeteria.

The construction on this project is going to give the Central Maine region about a $350 million economic boost by the time the school is finished.

That's because Mainers have been hired to build it and materials are being bought locally.

"No activity fuels and infuses economic activity into the region faster than economic construction," Karl Ward, President and CEO of Nickerson & O'Day, said. "We're going to have a $10 million payroll on this. That's salaries. All of the men and women working on this building live within an hour of this building."

The new Nokomis Middle/High School is set to be done next spring and they are holding a contest for a new mascot design that should be revealed Friday.
