WELLS, Maine — UPDATE: Wells man charged with murder after niece, 2, dies in triple shooting

A shooting involving a family in Wells sent three people to the hospital Saturday, Wells police Capt. Gerald Congdon told NEWS CENTER Maine.

Congdon said the three people shot were sent to area hospitals. One of them was a young child. There is no word on their conditions. The alleged shooter is in custody and is being held at the Wells Police Department.

A release from the department states there is no threat to the public, and this was an isolated incident.

Police have blocked off parts of Crediford Road in Wells as the investigation continues. One neighbor told NEWS CENTER Maine he heard gunshots while he was out on a walk on a trail behind his house.

“It sounded like thumps, just like on the ground or something was walking, but I couldn’t really tell where they were, and I thought they could have been an animal or gunshots or something like that," Miles Doucet said.

Doucet's mother, Allison McGarrigle, said they have lived on the street for about two and a half years.

“Everyone is really friendly, people are always walking their dogs and…it’s very quaint," she said.

McGarrigle added it was a shock to hear about the shooting and said "anyone would be shocked no matter where you live."

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is on scene assisting with the investigation.

According to the release, there is no further information available at this time.
