Jurors in Sharon Carrillo murder trial see cell phone photos, video of Marissa Kennedy before death

Sharon Carrillo, the mother of the 10-year-old girl, is on trial for depraved indifference murder in the death of her daughter.

BELFAST, Maine — Jurors in the fourth day of the Sharon Carrillo murder trial viewed photographs and video of a young, bruised girl kneeling with her arms overhead -- the same position Carrillo told police her daughter was in while Sharron Carrillo and her husband, Julio Carrillo, severely beat her.

Sharon Carrillo is charged with depraved indifference murder in the February 2018 death of her daughter, 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy, in Stockton Springs.

Julio Carrillo pleaded guilty to the same charge and was sentenced in August to 55 years in prison.

Dawn Ego of the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit testified about photos and video she found on a cell phone seized from the condominium where the Carrillos were staying.

Jurors were shown photos of a bruised young girl, kneeling on the floor in her underwear with her arms overhead. In one photo, an adult woman stood behind her.

On Tuesday, jurors heard an audiotape of a police interview with Sharon Carrillo following Kennedy's death in which she admitted beating Kennedy while she was in that position.

In the audiotape from a police interview shortly after Marissa’s death, Sharon Carrillo admits to police that she regularly “punished” her daughter by locking her in a closet, striking her in the head, face and torso, and forcing her to kneel while standing on the backs of her legs. She said she and her husband each whipped Kennedy with a belt as many as 15 times each, twice a day.

In a cell phone video, the young girl -- presumably Kennedy -- is seen hysterically crying and shrieking, hitting at the cell phone saying, "No, no" as Julio Carrillo tells her he's going to send the video somewhere and is "putting some jeans and shirts in a bag. [You] can stay away for two to three months."

In another video, Julio Carrillo can be heard telling his wife he hopes she loses custody of all of her children.

Ego testified she also found photos of a young child "with a significant amount of bruising" on her face, chest, the front and back of her legs and with "a large abrasion with a significant amount of blood coming from it."

A Maine State Police crime lab analyst testified on Wednesday that the bruises on Kennedy's body matched the buckle of the belt Sharon Carrillo told police she and her husband beat Kennedy with.

Sharon Carrillo said the beatings continued for three to four months.

She told police she beat her daughter because she lied, was “disrespectful” and wouldn’t stop screaming.

Maine’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Mark Flomenbaum, who conducted the autopsy on Kennedy, testified Wednesday afternoon that Kennedy ultimately died of battered child syndrome.

As prosecutors showed graphic photos taken during the autopsy, Flomenbaum said he found 40 to 50 separate blunt force trauma injuries, lacerations, deep, infected wounds, a lacerated liver and brain bleeding.

Some jurors and others in the courtroom looked away from the graphic photos.
During a short pause in the testimony, those in the courtroom were mostly still and silent, and jurors seemed dazed.

Flomenbaum said he thinks Marissa's heart quote "finally gave way."

Prosecutor Donald Macomber said previously he expected the prosecution to rest on Wednesday, but the jury was still viewing another police interview with Sharon Carrillo when they were dismissed for the day.
