Some 155,000 refrigerators sold nationwide are being recalled because the freezer handle can come off when pulled, leading to people falling down. More than three dozen injuries have been reported.

The recall is for six models of the GE Free-Standing French Door refrigerator and bottom freezers with fingerprint resistant stainless steel. They were sold from February 2020 through January 2022 at Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy and other home appliance stores across the country.

There have been 71 reports of the freezer drawer handle coming off, GE said. Thirty-seven people have been injured, three of whom had what were described as serious fall injuries.

The recalled units will have one of these model numbers:

  • GFE26JYMKFFS
  • GFE26JYMNFFS
  • GNE27EYMKFFS
  • GNE27EYMNFFS
  • GNE27JYMKFFS

Additionally, the serial numbers of the recalled models will have one of these two-letter combinations: DR, FR, GR, HR, LR, MR, RR, SR, TR, VR, ZR, AS, DS, FS, GS, HS, LS, MS.

The model and serial numbers can be found in a label on the top, left side of the interior of the refrigerator.

Anyone who has one of these recalled refrigerators is urged to contact GE to schedule a free in-home service to fix the problem. All known purchasers are being contacted directly, GE said.

Consumers can contact GE at at 888-345-4671 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online.
