PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Hundreds of concerts were held across the country on Sunday to encourage an end to gun violence.

Members of Portland's Phoenix Chorale, a music group dedicated to social justice, organized one of those concerts in Congress Square Park.

Different local bands and the choir performed for a few hours and remarks were given people by people whose lives have been affected by gun violence.

Organizers hoped people walking by on the street would stop to hear some music and ultimately their message.

“Most of the concerts across the country are indoors but we took the chance on doing outdoors in order to really reach out to people and engage maybe people who haven't been engaged with the issue,” said concert coordinator Betsey Ramage-Healey.

A handful of other communities across the state, including Bangor, Houlton and Saco, also held concerts.
