AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Baggers are usually the last people you see when you visit the grocery store, but Tuesday, they were competing for first.
Maine's top grocery baggers, who are employees at stores across the state, put their skills to the test at the Good Shepherd food bank in Auburn.
Contestants were judged on speed, technique and, of course, style — with extra points for smiling.
Matt Pagliaro from the Maine Mall Hannaford in South Portland captured the win.
He knew he had this competition "in the bag" from the beginning.
"It feels good, my store manager never doubted me," Pagliaro said. "I was very excited to win."
The key to winning?
"Definitely weight distribution," he said. "Because it definitely comes down to how heavy your bags are at the end."
Matt won a paid trip for two to Las Vegas, to represent Maine in the national "Best Bagger" competition.
