Declaration of Independence read on Independence Day

The tradition of reading the Declaration of Independence in Portland has been going on for 20 years.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- While many enjoyed parades, cook-outs and time with family or friends, others gathered at the Maine Historical Society for the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Outside the Wadsworth-Longfellow House in Portland, former state representative, Herb Adams, read to a crowd, holding American flags donned with red, white and blue clothing. 150 to 200 reproduction copies, known as The Dunlap Broadside, were made back in 1776. The Maine Historical Society has one of the original copies in its archives.
