Snowcats take skiers into Sugarloaf's glades

Snowcats are being used to give skiers a lift into some backcountry glades. Thus far, the response has been outstanding.

CARRABASSETT VALLEY (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Sugarloaf Mountain now offers snowcats to haul skiers into glades on adjacent Burnt Mountain. The activity is designed to offer a new opportunity to skiers.

The move has been in the works, but big March snowstorms have helped extend the season.

"We have a lot of skiers who like skiing in the trees," said Sugarloaf Marketing Director Ethan Austin.

Cats take as many as ten skiers up 1,400 vertical feet. The opportunity is offered on Saturday and Sunday between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

"First you look ahead a couple hundred yards and see where the trees are," said Noelle Tuttle, who is Sugarloaf's communications manager.

The rides have been sold out for the first two weekends. They will continue as long as conditions allow.

Sugarloaf reports it has received 50 inches of natural snowfall since March 1.
