Member of Grammy-nominated music duo grew up in Maine

FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- When the Grammy awards are handed out on February 12th, a lot of people in Freeport will be paying close attention. Drew Taggart, a 2008 graduate of Freeport High School, is nominated for three Grammy awards as part of the duo "The Chainsmokers."

All week long, teachers and students at Freeport High School have been buzzing about their

now famous alum. Teachers remember Taggart as a kind, smart student who was driven to succeed. In his senior year, he took part in an independent study project where he immersed himself in techno music and presented his music making skills to teachers and students. His mother says his passion for music started when he got his first drum set at the age of five.

"He was always super musical, music was always the thing he went to when he was happy and sad. He was passionate about music and had an insatiable appetite for music of all kinds," said Laura Girr.

Girr says a study abroad semester in Argentina his junior year of high school helped spark Drew's interest in techno music.

Drew went to Syracuse University after he graduated from Freeport High School and later

moved to New York City where he met Alex Pall and they formed "The Chainsmokers."

They are nominated for Best New Artist and their big hit "Closer" is nominated for best pop duo/group performance. Their song, "Don't Let Me Down," is nominated for best dance recording.
