Late WWII veteran's commemorative flag reported missing from Legion post

The missing flag was intended to cover the coffin of a WWII veteran

FALMOUTH (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Police in Falmouth say an American flag has been reported missing from the local American Legion post on Depot Road.

American Legion Post No. 164 says the flag was in an oak case inside the building, used to cover the coffin of a decorated WWII veteran.

Officials said the flag was at the post waiting to be delivered to the veteran's widow.

"This is unacceptable," Falmouth police wrote. "This is obviously very important to the [Legion] post and, more importantly, this hero's widow."

Police say the building is regularly rented and used by various organizations.

"All we are asking is that the flag be returned to its original location – no questions asked," police said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Falmouth Police Department.
