Limington orders firefighters to stand down

The town of Limington has issued a stand down order for its fire department after town officials discovered it was using outdated equipment.

LIMINGTON, (NEWS CENTER Maine) --

The town of Limington's fire department has been ordered to stand down because of equipment problems.

A message from town leaders released Sunday by York County Sheriff, Bill King, says town leaders have found outdated fire equipment was being used by the department.

According to the Limington municipal officers, firefighter gear such as jackets, pants and helmets over ten years old were still in service.

The officers say that's a violation of a National Fire Protection Association standard.

They also say they've taken steps to make sure mutual aid responses will cover Limington while the fire department works to meet standards.

Sheriff King's release says the town hopes to have the fire department fully operational again within the next few days and the town's medical calls will not be affected by the stand down order.
