5 things to know about Super Bowl LII – Patriots v. Eagles

(NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The New England Patriots will face an old foe at Super Bowl LII. Here are 5 Things You Need To Know about Super Bowl LII.

1. This is a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX. Philly and New England tangled in 2005, with the Patriots coming out on top 24-21. The Pats capped an incredible four year run by winning their third Super Bowl, with Brady beating Donovan McNabb. The game is widely remembered for Philadelphia’s clock mismanagement in the fourth quarter and McNabb throwing up on the sideline because he was so fatigued.

2. If the previous Super Bowl is an indication of what Super Bowl LII will be like, expect Patriots fans to be outnumbered. I was at the game back in 2005 (which was coincidentally played in Jacksonville), and the crowd was 75%-25% Eagles fans.

3. The Patriots as a franchise are going to the their tenth Super Bowl. Tony Eason lost to the Bears in 1986 and Drew Bledsoe lost to the Packers ten years later. Brady has been the quarterback in every other Super Bowl the Patriots have reached. He is 5-2; the franchise is 5-4. The Eagles have been to just two Super Bowls, losing to the Patriots and the Raiders.

4. Two key members of this year’s Eagles team were on last year’s Patriots Super Bowl champion team. Lagarrette Blount scored 18 TD’S as a Patriot in 2016-2017 and Chris Long drew a key holding penalty in the Super Bowl. The penalty forced an Atlanta punt leading to a game-tying touchdown by the Patriots that sent the game into overtime.

5. After defeating the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX and getting their third ring in four years, offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel both left the Patriots for head coaching jobs elsewhere. Current coordinators Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia are expected to do the same after Super Bowl LII. If they beat the Eagles this time around, McDaniels and Patricia will also leave with three rings in four years.
