Greely Sweeps Class A title games

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Fans of the Greely Rangers and Hampden Academy Broncos had a long night ahead of them on Thursday. Both the boys and girls teams from each school made it to the Class A Basketball State Championships at the Cross Insurance Arena.

The girls hit the court first, and Hampden Academy changed ahead early. The Broncos scored the first six points of the game before Greely's Anna DeWolfe put up 8 points tof her own. That gave the Rangers a lead they would never lose. Greely went on to win its first Class A gold ball, 53-38.

The boys' game came down to the wire. Hampden Academy's Kory Winch tied the game at 46 with less than a minute left to play. Shane DeWolfe was fouled late, and after missing his first free throw, he sank his second to give Greely a one point advantage with 5 seconds left. Hampden Academy put up an attempt at a buzzer beater, but it didn't fall. The Rangers win 47-46, their forty-fourth consecutive win and second straight Gold ball.
