ORONO (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Not only is "four more years" a familiar refrain in the political arena, it also applies to the University of Maine women's basketball coach.
Fresh from finishing the regular season with the best record in America East, UMaine signed Amy Vachon to a four-year contract as head coach of the Black Bears. She had served as interim head coach since her predecessor, Richard Barron, took an extended medical leave in January 2017.
Vachon is a native Mainer. She first caught the attention of basketball fans as a player at Cony High School and the University of Maine.
"You know, to be from Maine, to have played here, to even come back as an assistant coach was just a really, really neat experience," Vachon told NEWS CENTER Maine. "So now to be able to say that I'm the head coach for full time, it's just, it's really incredible. I'm just so thankful that the University is giving me this opportunity, and hopefully we can continue to do well."
Vachon has shown no signs of complacency since signing her contract. Under her direction, the top-seeded Black Bears handily won both games over the weekend in the America East conference tournament. They'll play Hartford in the championship game on Friday, March 9 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
