Athlete takes 'Tourney Time' to next level

Student athletes across the state competed in tournaments and championships Saturday as 'tourney time' kicked into full gear.

BANGOR (NEWS CENTER Maine) – Student athletes across the state competed in tournaments and championships Saturday as ‘tourney time’ kicked into full gear.

One athlete from Pittsfield proved herself by competing in not only a state quarter final basketball game, but a track state championship as well.

Christa Carr, a junior on the M.C.I. girls basketball team, faced off with Presque Isle at the Cross Insurance Center before rushing off to Lewiston to compete in shotput.

“You just gotta keep on going and you can't be stressed. You just gotta go through it,” Carr said.

Carr, a three-sport athlete and honor student, said the support from her family is what allows her to succeed.

"My family puts on so many miles,” she said.

"Every parent and grandparent here thinks that their children and grandchildren excel and obviously they all excel or they wouldn't be down here,” Rod Carr, Christa’s grandfather, said.

The whole family traveled to both of Saturday’s events to cheer Christa on.

Although her team fell short in Saturday morning’s game against Presque Isle, she won second in class B shotput.

"We tell our girls both of our girls that if you're going to do it, do your best and have fun doing it, and that's pretty much what she does,” Michelle Carr, Christa’s mom said.

Carr competes in basketball, field hockey and track. She also is a member of the school’s jazz band.

Teachers and coaches enable her to balance all of the activities, according to Carr. She says it allows her to do everything she loves.

"You gotta get all the experiences you can while you have the chance to,” Carr said.
