PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin of Maine says he's going to vote for a GOP tax overhaul that keeps intact the top tax rate instead of lowering it as President Donald Trump suggested.

Poliquin said Tuesday the proposal will help Mainers by doubling the standard deduction and increasing tax credits for children. He said it'd keep taxes low for small businesses and make large businesses more competitive by bringing the corporate rate into line with other industrialized countries.

He brushed aside a proposal by Trump to lower the top rate for high-income earners to 35 percent. Poliquin favors keeping it at 39.6 percent.

The House will vote Thursday.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Democrat Chellie Pingree is opposed to the GOP tax overhaul, calling it a "giveaway to corporations" and the wealthy.
