Two dogs shot, wounded in Buxton

Police brought one of the two wounded pit bulls to an animal clinic. The second dog ran off but was found the next morning.

***UPDATE*** The missing dog was found alive Friday morning about five miles from home.

BUXTON (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Buxton police are investigating the apparent shooting of two dogs, one of which is believed to be missing in the woods and wounded.

Officers responded Thursday afternoon to 43 Fifield Dr. for reports of a canine that had been shot and seriously injured. Police said they were led by homeowner Joanne Lamontagne, 59, to a pit bull bleeding from numerous wounds all suspected to have been caused by a firearm.

The dog was taken by police to a Portland animal clinic for treatment.

When a separate officer began an investigation, he learned that a second pit bull had been shot and had fled the area before the owners could catch it.

Neighbors told police they didn't see the incident but heard what they thought were gunshots.

Witnesses reported seeing the missing dog in the area of 1166 River Rd., just over a mile and a half from its home. They said the injured dog fled into the woods when they tried to catch it.

The missing dog is described as being white with brown spots. Police said it should have injuries to its hindquarters and caution should be used as it is wounded.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Buxton Police Department and ask for either Officer Keith Waltz or Animal Control Officer Adele Jones at 929-5151 or 929-6612.
