BOWDOINHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A tractor-trailer fire in Bowdoinham shut down I-295 for about 30 minutes Tuesday night.
It happened at mile-marker 42 in the southbound lanes just before 8 p.m.
The truck, which was hauling potatoes from St. Agatha to Massachusetts, experienced a mechanical defect, according to State Police.
The driver exited as the fire began and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the fire with his fire extinguisher, walking away, presumably, uninjured. The fire to the cab was eventually put out, and the trailer was spared.
State Police said the truck was a total loss.
The roadway was expected to be fully reopened by 10 p.m.
