(NEWS CENTER Maine) — Maine Game Wardens are warning that ice is thin on ponds and lakes around the state.
At least twelve people in nine different incidents have gone through thin ice in 24 hours.
Officials said a father and his two teenage girls were lucky to be alive after they fell through the ice on Long Pond in Southwest Harbor Wednesday night.
Game Wardens say two men fell through the ice on Long Lake Thursday night. 18-year-old Caleb Moore snowmobiling with 17-year-old passenger Joshua Stevens when they broke through the ice.
Officials say Moore almost drowned. Both were taken to Maine General Medical Center.
On Thursday, a Denmark man and his five-year-old daughter ended up at the Bridgton Hospital being treated for hypothermia after they fell through ice.
Wardens say two men from Guilford broke through thin ice on Manhanock Pond in Sangerville Wednesday night. Brian Gaw and Jason Goggin were snowmobiling when they fell through. Officials say the men struggled to get to shore.
Wardens say rain and warm temperatures last week deteriorated ice conditions significantly statewide. The recent return to cold temperatures should not relax the need for extreme caution on Maine’s waterways.
