Services for 'one of a kind' cyclist to be held Sunday

Funeral services will be held on Sunday in Portland for a beloved cyclist who was killed earlier this month during a cross-country charity ride to raise money for childhood cancer research.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) — 32-year-old James Dobson of Lebanon set out on October 1, 2018 on a recumbent tricycle from Dover, New Hampshire. Dobson was traveling 7,000 miles to San Diego to benefit the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

He was 44 days into his "Positive Vibes Tour" near Hattiesburg, Mississippi when he was hit by a car and killed. The crash remains under investigation.

Dobson had originally set a $10,000 goal on his charity ride's GoFundMe, as of Friday, Nov. 23, it had raised nearly $24,000. Family members say friends may continue the charity ride in the future to ensure that Dobson's legacy of giving lives on.

"They want to keep his memory alive and what he was doing alive because that is going to help all of us out so I think it's going to benefit everybody," said Jeff Dobson, James' cousin.

Public visiting hours will be held Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home located at 660 Brighton Ave. in Portland. There is also a GoFundMe to help the family pay for funeral expenses.
