SCARBOROUGH (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- A rally by students in support of David Creech failed to move district officials to rescind his resignation as Scarborough High School principal.

A statement released Wednesday by Creech's lawyer, William Michaud, said the Scarborough Board of Education denied a request to discuss his client's employment status in hopes of reaching a compromise.

The statement also registered Creech's disappointment at the refusal of Superintendent Julie Kukenberger to reconsider his resignation, which Creech claims he filed under duress.

Creech abruptly submitted his resignation the Friday before February break, surprising and upsetting many students and staff at the high school. They expressed their support for him by holding a rally at school last Monday.

Many in attendance at the rally said they were convinced Kukenberger forced Creech to resign when he sided with the opposition against new policies on later school start times and changes to proficiency-based learning practices. But district leaders have not confirmed or denied those suspicions.

Michaud's statement said Creech deserves to know why he is being pushed out of his job.

Despite the setbacks delineated in their statement, Michaud said Creech will continue to work toward a "fair and reasonable outcome." But if no compromise is reached, his current resignation will take effect at the end of June.
