PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Portland Police plan to up their staffing Wednesday night in the Old Port.

Police say this is one of the biggest bar nights of the year because many college students come home and reunite with their friends for a night out on the town before Thanksgiving.

The Portland Police department sent out a tweet today ... saying tonight is historically one of the busiest nights in the Old Port, and that they will have increased patrols out.

They warn drivers to be aware of large groups of people in the streets.

They say it will feel a lot like a summer weekend night in Portland, and that they encourage everyone to cooperate.

“We want everybody to celebrate and have a good time. We want them to have a safe time,” said Lt. James Sweatt.

“People that may go down alone and don't have a plan to get home at the end of the night. We want to make sure that people go as groups and that they leave as groups. We don't want any accidents to occur.”

Police will have parts of Fore Street and Union Street blocked off around 12:45 a.m. when the bars are closing to ensure everyone makes it home safely.

They also encouraged everyone to have fun, but in moderation.
