PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Whether it's coffee, beer or the hundreds of restaurants, there's nearly something for every foodie in Portland, a reputation that has grown over the past 10 years.

The Maine Real Estate and Development Association discussed collaborations between the real estate industry and the food industry at its conference Tuesday. The association said as the food industry grows, there's also an increasing need for production facilities, enhanced supply chains and specialty storage.

"For example, we've doubled the number of breweries over the last two and a half years in Maine. So we have distilleries that are opening up and need specialized kinds of facilities whether with floor drains or retail, as well as processing and brewing capacity that are in place," said Betsy Bieman, the director of Harvard's Maine food cluster project.

The importance of Maine's growing local and organic food movement was also discussed at the event.
